It is similar tocustomisation, but concerns the adoptionpatterns of technology and the transformationof practice at a deeper level. Understandingappropriation is a key problem for developinginteractive systems, since it critical to thesuccess of technology deployment. In this timely and comprehensive introduction to how YouTube is being used and why it matters, Burgess and Green discuss the ways that it relates to wider transformations in culture, society and the economy. The book critically examines the public debates surrounding the site, demonstrating how it is central to struggles for authority and control in the new media environment. Drawing on a range of theoretical sources and empirical research, the authors discuss how YouTube is being used by the media industries, by audiences and amateur producers, and by particular communities of interest, and the ways in which these uses challenge existing ideas about cultural 'production' and 'consumption'. Rich with both concrete examples and featuring specially commissioned chapters by Henry Jenkins and John Hartley, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in the contemporary and future implications of online media. It will be particularly valuable for students and scholars in media, communication and cultural studies."--Book cover. Search is a journey: an exploration where what we encounter along the way changes what we seek. But in order to guide people along this journey, designers must understand both the art and science of search. In Designing the Search Experience, authors Tony Russell-Rose and Tyler Tate weave together the theories of information seeking with the practice of user interface design. Understand how people search, and how the concepts of information seeking, information foraging, and sensemaking underpin the search process. Apply the principles of user-centered design to the search box, search results, faceted navigation, mobile interfaces, social search, and much more. In particular, the Friday when officials shut down the city of Boston and neighboring communities. Businesses all over the city were forced to shut down while the manhunt took place over the course of the day on Friday. While retail establishments were really out of luck because no one on the streets meant no one in the stores, other businesses were able to continue to operate because of a number of technologies that allowed remote workers to get access to their files, the systems they needed and their phone systems. Any business that implemented a full Unified Communications (UC) solution could have employees also communicating with instant messaging and know who was on-line because of the presence capabilities. Additionally, news of the events spread quickly and less because of news outlets who were, quite rightly, not allowed to provide specifics about many of the activities"-- CN QA76.9.A25 .M4864 2014 PP Amsterdam ; Boston FD 2014 YR 2014 SP Kapitel 2 PB Syngress SN 978-0-12-417040-7 ST Collaboration with cloud computing NO Machine generated contents note: 1. With the sophistication of search technologies like Google, business people expect to be able to get their questions answered about the business just like you can do an internet search. The truth is, knowledge management is primitive today, and it is due to the fact that we have poor business metadata management. This book is about all the groundwork necessary for IT to really support the business properly. By providing not just data, but the context behind the data. For the IT professional, it will be tactically practical--very "how to" and a detailed approach to implementing best practices supporting knowledge management. And for the the IT or other manager who needs a guide for creating and justifying projects, it will help provide a strategic map. * First book that helps businesses capture corporate (human) knowledge and unstructured data, and offer solutions for codifying it for use in IT and management. * Written by Bill Inmon, one of the fathers of the data warehouse and well-known author, and filled with war stories, examples, and cases from current projects. * Very practical, includes a complete metadata acquisition methodology and project plan to guide readers every step of the way. * Includes sample unstructured metadata for use in self-testing and developing skills. Organizational Change integrates major empirical, theoretical and conceptual approaches to implementating communication in organizational settings. Laurie Lewis ties together the disparate literatures in management, education, organizational sociology, and communication to explore how the practices and processes of communication work in real-world cases of change implementation. Written for both undergraduate and graduate students, the book fills in an important piece of the applied communication puzzle as it relates to organizations. In addition to giving a bold and comprehensive overview of communication research and ideas on change and those who bring it about, each chapter is illustrated with student friendly, real life case studies from organizations, including organizational mergers, governmental or nonprofit policy or procedural implementation, or technological innovation. A1 Kurzweil, Ray AB "The inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil is a controversial advocate for the role of machines in the future of humanity. In his latest, thrilling foray into the future, he envisions an event - the "singularity"--In which technological change becomes so rapid and so profound that our bodies and brains will merge with our machines." "The Singularity Is Near portrays what life will be like after this event - a human-machine civilization where our experiences shift from real reality to virtual reality and where our intelligence becomes nonbiological and trillions of times more powerful than unaided human intelligence. In practical terms, this means that human aging and pollution will be reversed, world hunger will be solved, and our bodies and environment transformed by nanotechnology to overcome the limitations of biology, including death." "We will be able to create virtually any physical product just from information, resulting in radical wealth creation. In addition to outlining these fantastic changes, Kurzweil also considers their social and philosophical ramifications."--Jacket. Slowly, many are discovering that stalwarts like Excel spreadsheets, KPIs, standard reports, and even traditional business intelligence tools aren't sufficient. These old standbys can't begin to handle today's increasing streams, volumes, and types of data. Amidst all of the chaos, though, a new type of organization is emerging. In The Visual Organization, award-winning author and technology expert Phil Simon looks at how an increasingly number of organizations are embracing new dataviz tools and, more important, a new mind-set based upon data discovery and exploration. Simon adroitly shows how Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other tech heavyweights use powerful data visualization tools to garner fascinating insights into their businesses. But make no mistake: these companies are hardly alone. Organizations of all types, industries, sizes are representing their data in new and amazing ways. As a result, they are asking better questions and making better business decisions. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. Other animals have stronger muscles or sharper claws, but we have cleverer brains. If machine brains one day come to surpass human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become very powerful. As the fate of the gorillas now depends more on us humans than on the gorillas themselves, so the fate of our species then would come to depend on the actions of the machine superintelligence. But we have one advantage: we get to make the first move. Will it be possible to construct a seed AI or otherwise to engineer initial conditions so as to make an intelligence explosion survivable? How could one achieve a controlled detonation? To get closer to an answer to this question, we must make our way through a fascinating landscape of topics and considerations. AB Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches innormative ethics. It may, initially, be identified as the one thatemphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to the approachthat emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that emphasizesthe consequences of actions (consequentialism). Suppose it is obviousthat someone in need should be helped. A utilitarian will pointto the fact that the consequences of doing so will maximize well-being,a deontologist to the fact that, in doing so the agent will be actingin accordance with a moral rule such as “Do unto others as youwould be done by” and a virtue ethicist to the fact that helpingthe person would be charitable or benevolent., This is not to say that only virtue ethicists attend to virtues, any more than it is to say that only consequentialists attend to consequences or only deontologists to rules. Each of the above-mentioned approaches can make room for virtues, consequences, and rules. Indeed, any plausible normative ethical theory will have something to say about all three. What distinguishes virtue ethics from consequentialism or deontology is the centrality of virtue within the theory (Watson 1990; Kawall 2009). Whereas consequentialists will define virtues as traits that yield good consequences and deontologists will define them as traits possessed by those who reliably fulfil their duties, virtue ethicists will resist the attempt to define virtues in terms of some other concept that is taken to be more fundamental. Rather, virtues and vices will be foundational for virtue ethical theories and other normative notions will be grounded in them., We begin by discussing two concepts that are central to all forms of virtue ethics, namely, virtue and practical wisdom. Then we note some of the features that distinguish different virtue ethical theories from one another before turning to objections that have been raised against virtue ethics and responses offered on its behalf. We conclude with a look at some of the directions in which future research might develop. AB The word deontology derives from the Greek words for duty(deon) and science (or study) of (logos). Incontemporary moral philosophy, deontology is one of those kinds ofnormative theories regarding which choices are morally required, forbidden, or permitted. In other words, deontology falls within thedomain of moral theories that guide and assess our choices of what weought to do (deontic theories), in contrast to those that guide andassess what kind of person we are and should be (aretaic [virtue]theories). And within the domain of moral theories that assess ourchoices, deontologists—those who subscribe to deontologicaltheories of morality—stand in opposition toconsequentialists. This general approach can beapplied at different levels to different normative properties ofdifferent kinds of things, but the most prominent example isconsequentialism about the moral rightness of acts, which holds thatwhether an act is morally right depends only on the consequences ofthat act or of something related to that act, such as the motive behindthe act or a general rule requiring acts of the same kind. AB John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was the most famous andinfluential British philosopher of the nineteenth century. He was oneof the last systematic philosophers, making significant contributionsin logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, andsocial theory. He was also an important public figure, articulating theliberal platform, pressing for various liberal reforms, and serving inParliament. During Mill's lifetime, he was most widely admired for hiswork in theoretical philosophy and political economy. However, nowadaysMill's greatest philosophical influence is in moral and politicalphilosophy, especially his articulation and defense of utilitarianismand liberalism (Nicholson 1998). This entry will examine Mill'scontributions to the utilitarian and liberal traditions. We willconcentrate on his two most popular and best known works,Utilitarianism (1861, cited as U) and OnLiberty (1859, cited as OL), drawing on other texts whenthis sheds light on his utilitarian and liberal principles. We willconclude by looking at how Mill applies these principles to issues ofpolitical and sexual equality in Considerations on RepresentativeGovernment (1859, cited as CRG), Principles ofPolitical Economy (1848, cited as PPE), and TheSubjection of Women (1869, cited as SW).
