A1 Deleuze, Gilles A1 Guattari, Félix A4 Tomlinson, H. A4 Burchill, G. AB Called by many France's leading intellectual, Gilles Deleuze is one of the most important philosophers in the Western world. His acclaimed works and celebrated collaborations with Felix Guattari have established him as a seminal figure in the fields of philosophy, cultural studies, and literary theory. The publication of What Is Philosophy? marks the culmination of Deleuze's career. Deleuze and Guattari situate philosophy in the realm of problems and possibilities. The book presents a revolutionary theory of philosophy and in the process develops a new understanding of the interrelationships among philosophy, science, and the arts. The authors differentiate philosophy from science and the arts, seeing each domain as a means of confronting chaos, and challenging the common view that philosophy is an extension of logic. They discuss the similarities and distinctions between creative and philosophical writing. Fresh anecdotes from the history of philosophy illuminate the book, along with engaging discussions of composers, painters, writers, and architects. A milestone in Deleuze's collaboration with Guattari, What Is Philosophy? brings new perspectives to Deleuze's studies of cinema, literature, painting, and music, while setting a brilliant capstone upon his intellectual corpus. Newcomers to the two thinkers' writings will relish the book's scope, energy, and inventiveness; veteran followers will appreciate Deleuze and Guattari's fierce determination to grasp the elusive meaning of philosophy in this, their last and most remarkable joint effort. Since the beginning of modernity, media have transformed the scale on which we act as social beings. And now in the era of digital media, media themselves are being transformed as platforms, content, and producers multiply. - Yet the implications of social theory for understanding media and of media for rethinking social theory have been neglected; never before has it been more important to understand those implications. This book takes on this challenge. - Drawing on Couldry's fifteen years of work on media and social theory, this book explores how questions of power and ritual, capital and social order, and the conduct of political struggle, professional competition, and everyday life, are all transformed by today's complex combinations of traditional and 'new' media. S. [381] - 391. - Literaturangaben RT Book, Section T1 Social Institutions A1 Miller, Seumas T2 The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy A2 Zalta, Edward N. AB The term, “social institution” is somewhat unclear both inordinary language and in the philosophical literature (seebelow). However, contemporary sociology is somewhat more consistent inits use of the term. Typically, contemporary sociologists use the termto refer to complex social forms that reproduce themselves such asgovernments, the family, human languages, universities, hospitals, business corporations, and legal systems. A typical definition is thatproffered by Jonathan Turner (Turner 1997: 6): “a complex ofpositions, roles, norms and values lodged in particular types ofsocial structures and organising relatively stable patterns of humanactivity with respect to fundamental problems in producinglife-sustaining resources, in reproducing individuals, and insustaining viable societal structures within a givenenvironment.” Again, Anthony Giddens says (Giddens 1984: 24):“Institutions by definition are the more enduring features ofsocial life.” He (Giddens 1984: 31) goes on to list asinstitutional orders, modes of discourse, political institutions, economic institutions and legal institutions. The contemporaryphilosopher of social science, Rom Harre follows the theoreticalsociologists in offering this kind of definition (Harre 1979: 98):“An institution was defined as an interlocking double-structureof persons-as-role-holders or office-bearers and the like, and ofsocial practices involving both expressive and practical aims andoutcomes.” He gives as examples (Harre 1979: 97) schools, shops, post offices, police forces, asylums and the British monarchy., In this entry the above-noted contemporary sociological usage will befollowed. Doing so has the virtue of grounding philosophical theory inthe most salient empirical discipline, namely, sociology., At this point it might be asked why a theory of social institutionshas, or ought to have, any philosophical interest; why not simplyleave such theorising to the sociologists? One important reason stemsfrom the normative concerns of philosophers. Philosophers, such asJohn Rawls (Rawls 1972), have developed elaborate normative theoriesconcerning the principles of justice that ought to govern socialinstitutions. Yet they have done so in the absence of a developedtheory of the nature and point of the very entities (socialinstitutions) to which the principles of justice in question aresupposed to apply. Surely the adequacy of one's normative account ofthe justice or otherwise of any given social institution, or system ofsocial institutions, will depend at least in part on the nature andpoint of that social institution or system., The entry has five sections. In the first section various salientaccounts of social institutions are discussed. Accounts emanating fromsociological theory as well as philosophy are mentioned. Here, aselsewhere, the boundaries between philosophy and non-philosophicaltheorising in relation to an empirical science are vague. Hence, it isimportant to note the theories of the likes of Durkheim and TalcottParsons as well as those of John Searle and David Lewis., In the second section so-called collective acceptance theories ofsocial institutions are discussed (Searle 1995 and 2010; Tuomela 2002and 2007., In the third section a teleological account of social institutions ispresented (Miller 2001 and 2010). Teleological explanation is out offashion in many areas of philosophy. However, it remains influentialin contemporary philosophical theories of social action., In the fourth section, the so-called agent-structure question isaddressed. At bottom, this issue concerns the apparent inconsistencybetween the autonomy (or alleged autonomy) of individual human agents,on the one hand, and the ubiquity and pervasive influence of socialforms on individual character and behaviour, on the other., In the fifth and final section the specific normative issue ofthe justice of social institutions is explored. This section includesa discussion of intra-institutional justice, e.g. the justice orinjustice of the reward system within an institution, as well asextra-institutional justice, e.g. the justice or injustice of a powerrelationship between a government and refugees. On the basis of these case studies he proposes a newtheory of power in the information age based on the management of communication networks PP Oxford FD 2009 YR 2009 SP 10-24 PB Oxford University Press K1 Communication K1 Communication and technology K1 Power (Social sciences) RT Book, Section T1 Ordet i poesien og ordet i romanen A1 Bachtin, Michail T2 Ordet i romanen U2 Bachtin, Michail PP Kbh.
